You must be enrolled or planning to enrol in a laser, optics or photonics technician associate or certificate program. SPIE does not state a country restriction; its published 2026 recipients include a student at Niagara College in Canada.
The closed 2026 application required details about your school and technician program, an unofficial academic transcript, a résumé, a personal essay about your motivation and career goals, and two recommendations. You also needed an SPIE account. Check SPIE's page for the next application period; no 2027 deadline is published.
