An award of $14,000 for up to three months of graduate research in Japan. Universities Canada has administered the Japan Foundation Trust Fund since 1975.

Master’s or doctoral level students conducting research in Japan. Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are master’s or doctoral level students enrolled at a Canadian university and are conducting research related to Japan with methods in humanities and social sciences. The research must be towards a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation. PhD candidates are not eligible.
Applications open October 14, 2026 and close February 2, 2027. Recipients will be announced in April 2027.
